The musical note[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of note-shaped objects used for different purposes.

Description

Though their design slightly differs between games, the musical notes generally resemble a singular eighth note. Usually, if the player touches it, the note will bestow specific items that depends on the game.

Game appearances

Sonic X Shadow Generations

Sonic Generations

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, after clearing a Challenge Act and ringing the Bonus Bell on the Challenge Act Gate, a musical note appears and fly vividly around the area. Catching the musical note adds a new artwork or music tracks to the Collection Room. A blue musical note gives the player an artwork, while a yellow musical note gives the player a music track. As the musical note floats around, a countdown of twenty seconds is shown directly above the musical note. If Sonic cannot catch the musical note by then, it disappears and he must start over.

The musical note also appears in the Challenge Act, Vector: Pick Up the Beat. Here, Vector produces a blue Musical Note and sends it at Modern Sonic. The objective is to Homing Attack the musical note and knock it back at Vector thirty times in order to make him miss the beat of the music. The color of the Musical Note changes to yellow after ten hits and to red after twenty hits. Each time the musical note changes color, it becomes faster and harder to hit.

Shadow Generations

The musical notes in Shadow Generations are just like the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, but with a slight difference. The blue note immediately flies down and starts traveling around in a certain area, requiring the player to give chase and catch it before it disappears. The yellow note, on the other hand, will fly away and eventually rest on somewhere that requires the player to complete a certain course of gimmicks and obstacles in time in order to catch it. Due to the nature of the yellow note in Shadow Generations, the countdown time may differ among notes.

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, the musical notes are a part of the Magenta Rhythm's mechanics. In this game, they are completely black and glow orange and yellow.

When using the Magenta Rhythm in its appropriate place, the musical notes will appear in midair to show the player's path. If the player touches the musical note at the right time on the Wii U GamePad as the Magenta Rhythm, it disappears with a high note and awards the player with a Ring.

Sonic Speed Simulator

In Sonic Speed Simulator, the musical notes are refered to as "Hidden Music Notes". Upon collecting them, the player will unlock new music that they can play.

Sonic Frontiers

In Sonic Frontiers, the musical notes are referred to as "Sound Memories" (サウンドメモリー Saundo Memorī?), and were added in the "Sights, Sound and Speed" update. In this game, they are completely orange, and they glow the same color as well.

In gameplay, sixty four Sound Memories are spread all over the five accessible Starfall Islands. The tracks included are from games from Sonic the Hedgehog CD to Sonic Frontiers itself. The Sound Memories can also be viewed on the map and be marked. If the player collects a note, they will unlock a song from one of the past installments that they could listen to via the Jukebox if it is enabled in the Options menu.

Unlike other collectibles, collecting all of the Sound Memories is not required in order to 100% an island.
