Knuckles Chao have red, pudding-like bodies with round, waterdrop-like heads. They also have large black eyes, no noses, a mouth with sharp teeth akin to that of a Dark Chao, round torsos that are smaller than their heads, smooth feet with no legs, and arms with no visible hands. In addition, the tips of their arms are spiked, much like Knuckles' gloves. They also have a floating dot above their heads, a prominent crescent-shaped white marking on their torsos, yellow foot soles, dreadlock-like spines on their heads, short and round tails, and a small set of wings on their backs.

Powers and abilities

Knuckles Chao are capable of flight. In addition, they possess the power to increase the rewards granted to the person they have bonded with.

History

Sonic Advance 3

In Sonic Advance 3, the Knuckles Chao is the form Cheese can assume when Knuckles the Echidna performs a Tag Action with Cream the Rabbit. While this Tag Action is in effect, Knuckles can perform the Chao Attack with Cheese. After a short while though, Cheese will exit their Chao Knuckles state.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

In Sonic X Shadow Generations, a Knuckles Chao appears as one of the 54 Chao hidden across various levels. It can be found in Act 2 of Seaside Hill, sitting near a cannon.

Other game appearances

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle/Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut

In both Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the Knuckles Chao was one of three character-based Chao that could be transferred from a special version of Tiny Chao Garden that was available via promotional demo discs and at public events. The Knuckles Chao was unable to compete in Dark Races and appeared as a red Chao within a Tiny Chao Garden. Like the Amy Chao and Tails Chao, a Knuckles Chao begins with 250 points on all five visible statistics all at level 01 and with A grade (seen when transferred to Sonic Adventure 2: Battle). In the 3D Gardens, it has a "v" mouth and normal eyes.

The most familiar method to obtain a Knuckles Chao for the GameCube Chao Gardens involves the Japanese version of certain games, as well as the aforementioned. A Nintendo GameCube disc known as the Nintendo Summer e-catalog 2003 contained a preview of Sonic Adventure DX. One option involved a Tiny Chao Garden transfer to Game Boy Advance that allowed players to download a Japanese version of Tiny Chao Garden along with a Knuckles, Tails, or Amy Chao of choice with 1,000 Rings. Once the download is successful, a player can then transfer the Chao (and rings) to a Japanese edition of Sonic Adventure DX or Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

There is currently no known English release of the Knuckles Chao, making both the Knuckles and Amy Chao exclusive to the Japanese versions of the games (they cannot be transferred normally due to these games being region locked). However, the data for these two still exist in international versions of these games. These Chao are only obtainable in international versions via external hacking methods, such as with Cheat Codes, mods, or by using a Save file converter. The same can be said for obtaining a Knuckles Chao in HD editions of Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

In Sonic Speed Simulator, Knuckles Chao first appeared as a collectible pet of the "Chaos" rarity. It could be unlocked as a beta prize for the paid beta version of Sonic Speed Simulator. It later became a Chao of the "Exotic" rarity and could be unlocked during the "Treasure Hunt Event" by finding thirty hidden Eggman Keys. Alternatively, the player could buy the Knuckles Chao for 199 Robux.

In gameplay, Knuckles Chao can be equipped to the playable character, allowing it to fly by the side of the playable character as they move around. In addition, when equipped, Knuckles Chao will grant additional Rings whenever the playable character obtains a Ring, and additional Damage whenever they attack an enemy or a boss. The player can as well level up Knuckles Chao for a cost of Rings and/or Red Star Rings at the Upgrade Machine, with level 25 being the maximum level. Leveling up the Knuckles Chao will improve its reward-granting attributes. Additionally, the player can fuse a Knuckles Chao by collecting five Knuckles Chao, leveling all of them up to maximum, and bringing them to the Fusion Machine. Fusing a Knuckles Chao will result in a singular fused Chao at level 1.

Following the Knuckles update on 20 April 2022, the Knuckles Chao became an NPC that tells the player that Knuckles is Trapped in Emerald Hill and encourages the player to go find him.

On 21 May 2022, the Knuckles Chao was re-released as an unlockable Chao in the “Treasure Hunt Event”. In order to unlock the Knuckles Chao, the player had to collect all 30 Eggman Keys during the "Treasure Hunt Event".
