NiGHTS (ナイツ Naitsu?) is the titular protagonist of the NiGHTS series. They are a first-level Nightmaren that flies freely through the skies of Nightopia, a dream world that exists in the Night Dimension.

Unrestrained, graceful, bright, cheerful, and full of curiosity,[3][5] NiGHTS was one of the most powerful Nightmarens created by Wizeman the Wicked, the malevolent ruler of Nightmare, a dark realm in the Night Dimension. Wizeman sent the Nightmarens to destroy Nightopia by stealing Ideya from Visitors. However, NiGHTS was unhappy with Wizeman's orders, and instead allied themself with the Visitors to defend Nightopia.

Sonic Adventure

In Sonic Adventure and its enhanced port, Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, NiGHTS appears in the Card & Pinball minigame in Casinopolis, featuring elements from Nights into Dreams. NiGHTS themself can also be seen floating over an Ideya Palace when the player loses their last ball.

In the Mission Mode of Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, NiGHTS' picture can be seen on a small billboard next to Tails' shop.

NiGHTS also makes a cameo appearance as a Chao. The Neutral Fly Type Chao resembles NiGHTS.

Sonic Shuffle

In Sonic Shuffle, when the date on the Dreamcast is set to Christmas Eve, NiGHTS will make a cameo appearance and replaces Lumina as the guide.

Sonic Adventure 2

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, NiGHTS makes multiple cameos. Firstly, in City Escape, billboards and posters depict advertisements for a NiGHTS hotel, which can be seen in the skyline of Shadow's Radical Highway stage.

NiGHTS also makes a cameo appearance as a Chao. The Neutral Fly Type Chao resembles NiGHTS.

Sonic Battle

In Sonic Battle, NiGHTS appears in the Shadow's Speed Demon minigame, where they can be seen flying in the background whenever the player reaches the goal.

Shadow the Hedgehog

In Shadow the Hedgehog, a billboard of NiGHTS can be seen to the right of where Shadow begins Lethal Highway, right as they land on solid ground.

Sonic Riders series

Sonic Riders

In Sonic Riders, NiGHTS made their first cameo as a playable character. They can be unlocked if the player completes the missions of all three of the Babylon Rogues and their personal Extreme Gear is called the Night Sky. Sections of the Sega Carnival and Sega Illusion courses feature elements from Nights into Dreams.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, NiGHTS returns as an unlockable playable character alongside with the Night Sky. In addition, signs advertising NiGHTS and Nights: Journey of Dreams can be seen in both '90s Boulevard and '80s Boulevard. They are unlocked by completing all missions in Story Mode. NiGHTS has the following stats in gameplay:

Sonic Generations

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, a hotel with NiGHTS' likeness on it appears in Radical Highway, just as it did in the original stage.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

In Sonic X Shadow Generations, a NiGHTS Chao makes an appearance during the celebration of Sonic's birthday. It can later be rescued in Act 1 of Green Hill, after which it will appear outside the level's entrance.

Sonic Lost World

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, NiGHTS appears in the Nightmare Zone DLC, which is based off the NiGHTS universe. Here, they help Sonic in escaping Wizeman's curse at the end of the zone by Paralooping Reala (who was opening Paraloop portals to Nightmare) and escorting him to the end of the level.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, a Costume set designed in the image of NiGHTS is unlockable in-game with the bonus edition for this title.

Sonic Superstars

In Sonic Superstars, Metal NiGHTS is an unlockable design for the Metal Fighter. Parts for Metal NiGHTS can be purchased in the Shop after achieving a Perfect Bonus in a Bonus Stage.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the NiGHTS Hotel once again appears in Radical Highway, now sporting a holographic projection of NiGHTS' head on its roof.

It would later be confirmed that they will be free DLC coming to the game on 24 December 2025, and their personal machine is the Dream Sleeper. Furthermore, it is their first Sonic kart racing game to appear in their base form, as Transformed has them transform into a car.

Sonic Pinball Party

In Sonic Pinball Party, NiGHTS appears along with a NiGHTS-themed pinball game, featuring many elements from NiGHTS into Dreams. Sonic Pinball Party is the only game where NiGHTS actually interacts with Sonic, as NiGHTS helped Sonic free Amy and Tails from Dr. Eggman's hypnotism. NiGHTS is also a level two competitor in the Egg Cup Tournament.

Sega All-Stars series

Sega Superstars

In Sega Superstars, NiGHTS is playable in the NiGHTS into Dreams game. The player must control NiGHTS in Spring Valley or Twin Seeds with their arms to fly through enough rings in order to break the Ideya Capture and return the Ideya to the Ideya Palace.

Sega Superstars Tennis

In Sega Superstars Tennis, NiGHTS is a playable character that is available from the beginning of the game. They play tennis with other Sega characters.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, NiGHTS appears as the flagperson who waves the checkered flag at the start and end of the races.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Due to popular demand to make NiGHTS a playable character in the first game, both NiGHTS and Reala appear as playable characters in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. They appear as the vehicles while a Nightopian and a Nightmaren drive them, respectively. When the player gets a All-Star Move as either racer, they'll control NiGHTS or Reala for a limited time. A NiGHTS-related race-track, Dream Valley, also appears in the game. Because NiGHTS is a playable racer in the game, Ristar replaces them as the flagman.

In Sonic Runners, NiGHTS appeared as an equipable buddy during two of the promotional events for the game. When equipped, the music changes.

Sonic Rumble Party

In Sonic Rumble Party, NiGHTS has a whole event themed after the duology named after them (as of Sunday, March 2nd, 2026), dubbed the "NiGHTS Crossover Event." They make a playable appearance with three different skin variants and make two cameos as stickers. They also have their signature Skill, the Paraloop, only usable by them and Reala. The NiGHTS Chao is also available as a buddy.

In Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, NiGHTS appeared during the Worlds Unite crossover where they joined Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man's Unified Army to stop Sigma's conquest of the multiverse.

Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence

In Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence, two NiGHTS Chao from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 make an appearance as residents of Sky Sanctuary. During an expedition, Knuckles helps a NiGHTS Chao obtain a stone medallion, unwittingly discovering a Portal Gear in the process.
