DC Comics, Inc. (later simply known as DC) is an American comic book publisher and the flagship unit of DC Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery.^[1][2] The company is best known for its numerous publications of iconic heroes including Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

History

DC Comics' earliest collaboration with the Sonic the Hedgehog series is widely unknown in the mainstream. They were the first and only comic book publishing company to publish Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)'s comic book, the Sonic the Hedgehog (promotional comic), in multiple of their titles. The exact details behind the collaboration with DC Comics to promote Sonic the Hedgehog's first comic are unknown but it was likely part of Sega of America's aggressive marketing at the time.

In 2024, to celebrate Batman Day, an animated short featuring Shadow the Hedgehog as Batman confronting a crook was released. This would end up leading up to an announcement at Sonic Central, where SEGA would announce that they would be teaming up for a multi-year deal featuring more Sonic characters crossing over into the world of DC Comics, including Knuckles as Superman, Amy as Wonder Woman, Sonic as the Flash, Shadow as Batman, Silver as Green Lantern and Tails as Cyborg. The collaboration will launch with a series of monthly comics in March 2025, penned by Ian Flynn, and will also include other merchandise and licensed products through 2026.^[3]

Trivia

• Prior to the collaboration in 2024, the Sonic series had previously made numerous references to DC Comics, namely in the Archie Comics:
  • A version of Sonic, called Bat-Sonic, made an appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog #19, and would later be referenced and receive a dedicated pin-up in Sonic the Hedgehog #38, which also featured Tails as Batman's sidekick, Robin.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog #82, Sonic mentions one of his favorite comic book heroes is named Dark Bat.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog #96, Sonic is seen reading a comic book called "Autohero". In said comic, the character transforms by running into a phone booth, the same way Clark Kent transforms into Superman.
  • In Sonic X #11, Dr. Eggman alludes to the titles of the Kingdom Come and Crisis on Infinite Earths comics.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog #277's Off Panel, the suit Sonic wears in the final panel is the same one that the Flash wears, with the lightning bolt replaced with a ring.
  • Outside of the Archie Comics, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film has a promotional art called "Blue Justice", featuring Sonic and his signal in the sky, which is a reference to Batman.
• Prior to writing the crossover, Ian Flynn wrote for many DC Comics projects, including a story titled "Split Decision" for Superman Special in 2018.
