At one point, I gave up. I lost direction and forgot why I chose to fight. In time, my friends reminded me we did it for the sake of everyone else...

— Mega Man X, Mega Man #50

X, also known as Mega Man X, is a character that appears in the Mega Man comic series, and the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs, published by Archie Comics. He is an advanced robot called a Reploid who hails from an alternate reality.

X is the main protagonist of the Mega Man franchise's Mega Man X series. He was built by Dr. Light as the first Reploid, a robot with mental capacity and free will like a human (serving as a successor to the original Mega Man). Light sealed X in a capsule, aware he would not live to see him finished. In 21XX, X was discovered by Dr. Cain and used to make more Reploids. X went on to join the Maverick Hunters, hoping to preserve peace between humans and Reploids. Ever since Sigma's rebellion, X has led the Hunters against his Maverick forces.[1]

History

Worlds Unite

Act I: Deadly Fusion

Following a previous adventure, X led a Hunter assault on Sigma's latest fortress, determined to finish off the Maverick leader once and for all. While Zero and Axl fought against Sigma's lieutenant Vile, X went after Sigma himself, only to witness the villain's escape to Sonic's World through a Genesis Portal.[2] Aided by the arriving time traveler Silver the Hedgehog, X and his two companions opened another portal and set out to pursue Sigma, only to land in the Sonic Boom World. Joined by the unlikely heroes of Team Sticks, the trio then used the technology of that reality's Dr. Eggman to open another portal and continue their quest.[3][4]

The group managed to track Sigma to Sonic's World as it was being merged with Mega Man's World in the year 20XX, and X and his teammates joined forces with Sonic the Hedgehog's Freedom Fighters and Mega Man's Robot Masters aboard the Sky Patrol.[5] This led to a conversation between X, Mega Man, and Roll, a meeting of Dr. Light's creations previously separated by a century of time. The two were struck by their many similarities, both of them having built to fulfill Dr. Light's dreams of peace. Feeling somewhat responsible for the tragedies that had befallen his time, X contemplated asking Dr. Light never to create him so as to prevent them from occurring, but Mega Man encouraged him not to give up. The trio were then summoned to a meeting by Zero and Break Man, which led to a bit of a laugh for X and Mega Man as each wondered whether the other had fought "the red guy."[6]

Sally Acorn later turned the meeting between the leadership of the various groups to X, as he had the most experience dealing with Sigma. However, the proceedings were interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Dr. Wily, Dr. Eggman, and Xander Payne. The trio were briefly imprisoned, but upon learning that they had knowledge of Sigma's plans, X agreed with Sonic that they needed the doctors' help against the Maverick leader. After learning that Sigma intended to merge more worlds together and drain their power, the Sky Patrol set it's course for the Lost Hex. Along the way, X attempted to contact Alia and Signas but failed, but was cheered when Sally, Cream the Rabbit, Roll, and Nicole the Holo-Lynx offered their services as Navigators. The heroes were soon forced to contend with Sigma's Mechaniloid, under the leadership of the Deadly Six.[7]

During the fight, X and Zero recognized some previously defeated robots, and realized that Sigma must have cloned them using his new powers. The effects of their armor on the Deadly Six also made it evident to the Hunters that the Zeti were being controlled by Sigma. Unfortunately, their success against the Mechaniloids was halted as the villainous aliens used their strange powers to force X, Mega Man, and their fellow robots to attack the Freedom Fighters.[8]

Unable to stop themselves, X and the others forced their organic allies to retreat into the Sky Patrol's interior. Fortunately, both they and their alien puppet masters were halted by the Egg-Wily Uppity Robot Scrambler Cannon, which destroyed the Sigma Armor and freed X and his comrades from enemy control. They had little time to rest, however, as Sigma appeared from the depths of the Lost Hex in a massive new body with an army of Time-Cloned Mavericks at his command.[9]

Axl panicked at the sight of so many fallen foes and friends, and X had to calm him down before checking on Zero. Assured that his red-armored ally was okay, X joined in battling the Mavericks, but like the others found himself too drained to defeat them. As the majority of them began to scatter through Genesis Portals to invade other worlds, X tried to stop them only to be knocked down by Vanishing Gungaroo. The kangaroo-Maverick and a handful of others remained behind to finish off X and his teammates, only to be attacked by a group of heroic from the world of Street Fighter recruited by Sticks. Inspired by the idea, Sally Acorn directed the heroes to split into teams in order to recruit more allies and stop the Mavericks across the worlds they had scattered to.[10]

X himself teamed up with Sticks and went over to the Ancient Steppe in the world of Monster Hunter, also being shocked that Sigma ended up resurrecting the X-Hunters before attempting to warn Felyne and Palico to flee. Eventually, a Gore Magala arrived and X nearly fought with it, although Sticks averted the conflict by convincing it to join up and fight Sigma.[11]

Afterwards, they and their new allies joined the force assembled by the other heroes from the Sky Patrol crew. This army then attacked Sigma directly, engaging his defenses and destroying his massive body. Unfortunately, he then unveiled an incredibly powerful new form that decimated the heroes' ranks. It was left to Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man to face him, and they eventually succeeded in destroying him. Unfortunately, his use of the Genesis Portals threatened to destroy all reality. It was only the actions of Xander Payne that prevented this from occurring-in fact, he prevented Sigma from ever traveling back in time. As a result, X and his comrades never left their time, and the other Hunters came to believe that X had succeeded in destroying their foe once and for all.[12][13]

Personality

X is a pacifist by nature and wishes for nothing more than to live in peace. Years of fighting have somewhat disheartened him to the idea of everlasting peace and even caused him to retire for a short time. However, he knows that it is his duty to fight for those who cannot defend themselves as long as evil threatens the world. While he is dedicated to stopping Sigma, he is not as driven as Zero, and is often more moderate in his methods and in recognizing the need for caution. He evidently feels somewhat responsible for the violence that has wracked his world, but has become dedicated to trying to create a peaceful world for humans and Reploids. Compared to Mega Man, X is closer to a young adult than a boy. Due to his more advanced systems, X is capable of deeper thoughts and feelings than previous robots or even most of the Reploids of his time. He does share his willingness to trust others and lending a helping hand whenever he can, a trait that his enemies have exploited more than once.

Powers and abilities

X is a formidable fighter who specializes in long-range combat and marksmanship. His physical capabilities are far beyond that of a human's, and his main weapon is the X-Buster. His body has a Variable Weapons System that allows him to copy the weapons of any Reploid foe he defeats. As an advanced successor to Mega Man, X has a number of abilities that Mega Man does not, including the ability to dash and to scale walls by kicking off of them, plus the unique advantage of equipping special Armor Parts created by Dr. Light to gain new powers.Perhaps X's greatest feature is his potential. Other characters, such as Dr. Light, note that X has unlimited potential to grow stronger. As he fights and learns, X becomes even stronger and it is believed his upper power limits have yet to even be calculated, let alone achieved.

Weapons

Like Mega Man before him, X possesses a solar-powered arm cannon called the X-Buster, capable of firing solar bullets and charging capacity.

Relationships

Sticks the Badger

Stranded in the Sonic Boom World, X first met Sticks after she hit Zero. She thought they were trying to harm the villagers, but X corrected her, leading to her believe it was a fulfillment of a vision she had. As they get along well, she tells X a scarf will look good on him, which he considers. When X was preparing to fight against Gore Magala, Sticks steps in, and X is surprised when Sticks tries to calm it down and talk with it.

Mega Man

X encountered Mega Man in his arrival from a portal. While their sibling brotherly relationship was short, X was impressed of Mega Man's fighting skills during training as he has conviction to stop Sigma. They both argue recalling their similar past experience of fighting bad guys, unlike Mega Man however, X gave up the fight a one point, but his expression with Mega Man changed him. Mega Man was surprised that X was created by Dr. Light showing his X-Buster, he even goes to tell Mega Man about Dr. Light not to build him as that avoid the dangerous wars Reploids would bring. Mega Man denies this, believing X that the future is safer with him to fight for everyone, not knowing of the events that could happen and that his "big brother" doesn't want him talking like that. They also laugh of their complicated fight experience with "the red guy".

Sigma

Sigma was X's former commander of the Maverick Hunters and now his archenemy. In the past, X was horrified to hear the news about Sigma going maverick, his plans to destroy the world, leading him no choice but to fight and defeat him many times, again and again as the years pass. When Sigma was resurrected once again, X chase him only to lose him from a portal to another world. X would explain who Sigma is and his plans with the Unified Army. X was later present fighting countless Sigma's Body, but lost to the real Sigma's true form, though he would be stopped by Sonic and Mega Man. However, unknown to X and everyone, Xander Payne opens a portal to the past destroying Sigma moments before his departure, X was then present and shocked about this, not knowing if it was him or someone else who shot Sigma. Nonetheless, their infiltration to his fortress and stopping Sigma prove X and the Maverick Hunters mission a success.
