Refreshinator^[1] (ラフレシアン^[2], Rafureshian^?, lit. "Rafflesian") is the boss of Planet Wisp in the Wii version of Sonic Colors and Sonic Colors: Ultimate and an upgraded version of Tropical Resort's boss, Rotatatron.

Appearance

Designed as a more advanced version of the Rotatatron, Refreshinator resembles a large mechanical flower, with a orange head like a flower's disc and eight long, curved silver panels like pedals surrounding it connected by hinges. The other side of the panels are the same silver color, but with a glowing line of green running their length and curvature, and a small, circular silver metal device in the halfway point of the green line that has a glowing green orb in the center. The head is mostly orange, with two large eyes in a vertical column (akin to Neo Metal Sonic's transformed states) that have an iris that is normally glowing cyan, but can change to glowing red. Both eyes have a large orange eyelid with a green vertical stripe going down their center, and under the eyes is a thick, curved line of triangular white plating under the eye in a zig zag pattern like sharp teeth in a smile - with a silver spike on either end that looks like a small drill. More silver plating with a zig zag pattern appear on both left and right sides of the face. The head is surrounded by a yellow rim with green lights in the center and two small circular green devices hang off the rim at the 5 and 7 o'clock positions. The green devices have two silver claws each hanging down and a small dark hole in-between them. The pedal-like panels can close around the head to make it look like a drill.

The main body of Rotatatron is mostly green. Two large green tanks with a white rim are connected by a ball barring at the top, with a dark grey top and an teal metal strip visible between the main tank body and the top. Two large thrusters with grey cones are located on the bottom of Rotatatron's body, and an inverse cone inside them. The backside of the main body has a large spike-like cone protrusion that ends in a grey tip.

The sides of the main body are where Rotatatron's arms are connected, with a short cylinder shoulder that is mostly black with a green circular ring and a grey metal panel inside the ring containing a glowing cyan spike. The arms are five connected spherical balls with two small spikes each on both sides - the spikes are normally glowing cyan but can change to glowing red like the eye. The middle, elbow-like one is larger than the others and more detailed, with a large, green, extra spike in the outside joint area. The arms end with large mechanical green forearms, connected to grey metal claws with three sharp fingers each by a yellow wrist ring that has a light running around the middle. The wrist ring's light is normally glowing cyan, but can also change to glowing red like the eye.

Powers and abilities

Refreshinator hangs on to and rotates itself around a large, flying, circular ferris wheel made up of a large glowing ring and two inner rings with connected spinning cups using its large, dangerous claws. Its pedal-like panels can close around its eye to protect it and shoot lasers from the eight small outside devices as it spins like a drill. It can also somehow create electric pulses from it face area that then travel along the outside ring of the ferris wheel.

History

Sonic Colors

Sonic locates Planet Wisp's tractor beam generator and comments on how they are "getting harder and harder to find". As soon as that is said, Refreshinator appears before the hedgehog. With Sonic saying that Dr. Eggman can give up now, the hedgehog then battles, with no response.

After the battle, Sonic is having a conversation with the destroyed Refreshinator, but gets caught by Tails. Sonic tries to remind him that Planet Wisp is free, but he refuses to forget what he saw, stating that he has not seen him do something like that before.

Battle

Boss guide

The Refreshinator boss fight takes place inside of a large ferris wheel where circular cups move around. Here, Rotatatron will grabs various parts of the main wheel with its arms and change its position. The boss will occasionally fire rotating electric lasers (ranging from three to eight) while covering its head with a protective shell; the lasers can be avoided by standing underneath one of the circular cups - which will spin when hit by a laser.

After the first hit, it will also fire a pulse of electricity that slowly moves around the outer ring of the arena. The second hit will cause Refreshinator to enter a "pinch mode" where it turns its cyan eye and lights red, speeds up, and shoots two electricity pulses that move in opposite directions.

The player must damage Refreshinator by hitting its weak spot (its head), which can be reached by using the nearby circular cups, three times with a normal Homing Attack. Pink Wisp capsules are found on the red platforms and can be used to do double damage to the boss. After sustaining enough damage (thrice with a standard Homing Attack and twice with two Pink Spikes or with a single Homing Attack and Pink Spikes combo), Refreshinator will explode and give off a shower of Rings.

In Sonic Colors: Ultimate, beating Refreshinator with under three hits unlocks the achievement, "Eye Of The Hedgehog".

• One of the samples used in the music that plays during the battle against Refreshinator is also used in the music that plays when fighting Egg Wizard in Sonic Rush Adventure.
• Refreshinator's Japanese name, Rafflesian, comes from the parasitic flowering plant called the Rafflesia, referencing the robot's flower-like appearance.
