The Octo-Ink[1] (オクトパストラップ[2] Okutopasutorappu?, lit. "Octopus Trap") is an Action Item that appears in Sonic Free Riders. It is used to obscure opponents' views.
Description
The Octo-Ink takes the appearance of a small and spherical pink robot octopus (akin to the Octus) with a red button on top of its head. In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, it was made blue instead.
Game appearances
Sonic Free Riders
Sonic with an Octo-Ink.
In Sonic Free Riders, the Octo-Ink can be obtained from the different Item Boxes on the race tracks. When utilizing it, the Octo-Ink releases a squirt of black ink behind the character which becomes a black dome on the ground. If the racers make contact with the ink, their field of vision will be obscured for a short time, making it more difficult for them to race; in the player's case, this effect will obstruct the screen with black ink. While the ink will eventually disappear, the player can use hand-wiping motions to wipe most of the ink away. To use the Octo-Ink in gameplay, the player must bring one of their hands up in the air and bring it down.
Sonic Forces: Speed Battle
In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, the Octo-Ink makes an appearance, retaining its design from Sonic Free Riders, although it is blue instead of pink now. It is a Trap Item that can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by the Phantom Rider. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Octo-Ink if they use the Steal power-up in the same game, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.
Once obtained, the player can utilize the Octo-Ink by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user will spawn three Octo-Inks some distance ahead of the user's current location on all the lanes that the user is not currently on. If a character, including the user themselves, touches one of these traps, they will take damage, causing them to lose Rings and slow down momentarily. In addition, the player's vision will be blinded by a shot of ink. To avoid the Octo-Ink, the playable character must either jump over its traps or run in-between them.
The Octo-Ink can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to levels 4, 10 and 16 respectively. For each upgrade, the damage dealt by the Octo-Ink will be increased.
Trivia
- The Octo-Ink works identically as the Blooper item from the Mario Kart series.
